Are you a recent graduate with a passion for storytelling and the dynamic world of radio? An incredible opportunity awaits to jumpstart your career with a comprehensive, hands-on internship between two of Gauteng’s prominent stations. This programme is designed to equip you with the essential skills needed to thrive in the broadcast journalism industry.

Location: Midrand and Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
Internship Period: 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026

About the Internship Programme

This unique 12-month internship offers an unparalleled chance to acquire practical radio broadcast and newsroom experience. You will rotate between the commercial energy of Jacaranda FM in Midrand and the community-focused, academic environment of VowFM at Wits University in Johannesburg every six weeks. A key requirement is a willingness to travel between these two locations.

As part of your professional development, the programme includes attendance at various short courses offered by the prestigious Wits Radio Academy. To support you during this learning period, a monthly basic stipend is provided.

Your Learning Journey: What You Will Experience

The rotational structure ensures you gain a well-rounded perspective of the radio industry.

At Jacaranda FM (Midrand):

  • Grasp general newsroom operations and workflow.
  • Assist seasoned journalists with researching and compiling compelling stories.
  • Gain invaluable field reporting and news desk experience.
  • Receive practical exposure to various functions within a major commercial news department.

At VowFM (Johannesburg):

  • Develop on-air confidence by reading and compiling news bulletins.
  • Hone your skills in reporting live from the field.
  • Learn the art of packaging content for current affairs programmes.
  • Participate directly in news and current affairs programming.
  • Master updating social media platforms with engaging news content.
  • Complete certified short courses with the Wits Radio Academy.

Are You the Ideal Candidate?

To qualify for this exciting opportunity, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or a 3-year National Diploma in Journalism or a directly related field.
  • A valid driver’s licence (or proof that you are currently in the process of obtaining one).
  • An excellent command of the English language. Bilingualism in Afrikaans and English is a significant advantage.
  • Demonstrable competence in writing and voicing radio scripts.
  • Strong fact-checking abilities and a keen eye for quality control.
  • Basic experience in operating field/studio production and recording equipment.
  • Basic editing and multi-track mixing experience.
